Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee. Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha…and the secrets of her heart.
I thought everything about Leigh Bardugo's Debut novel was amazing. I must admit that I had a hard time pronouncing the names, and such. Although this did not take away from the book for me, I just went with the flow and adapted my own names for them.
I thought that Shadow & Bone was interesting and beautiful. I was utterly in love with characters, and the world that Bardugo created.
The Fold was explained in a way that left the reader the place to envision it in their own minds, which for me was a very scary, dark place of the unknown. Things that lurked in The Fold were to be feared, and it was right down terrifying.
Alina, the main character, and her friends + others have to cross The Fold, not making it very far until they hear something and it's then that they are attacked, it is then that there is a bright light, something that saved them all. And it came from Alina.
When she awakens her life then changes, and she is shown things that she never knew about herself. And from that moment on she will be fighting a battle against people who will want her for what she is, and what she can do.
Alina was such a great character. In the beginning she was so weak, everything was so new, she had no understanding to the things that were happening or even how to handle it in any type of fashion. But the way she held herself, the confidence that she came into was in a way so beautiful. Even though she was not perfect, that helped create this amazingly written character that came alive to me as I read.
Then you have The Darkling. Holy hell. What can I say about him..... besides oh my god! He was just such a mysterious character. Never knowing what to expect. Do you trust him, or not? What was it about The Darkling that had me so transfixed on him.
There is not much that I want to tell you about this book. I mean really, one little thing could just take away from the book, and I feel that you should enjoy every word. Shadow & Bone was brilliant, mysterious and right down amazing. You will be left speechless. I will just let you know, that you will be shocked and satisfied at the same time, by the very last page.
“The thought filled me with grief, grief for the dreams we'd shared, for the love I'd felt, for the hopeful girl I would never be again.”
