Run run run.
That's what twelve-year-old Annie loves to do. When she's barefoot and running, she can hear her heart beating . . .
thump-thump, thump-thump.
It's a rhythm that makes sense in a year when everything's shifting: Her mother is pregnant, her grandfather is forgetful, and her best friend, Max, is always moody. Everything is changing, just like the apple Annie's been assigned to draw a hundred times.
This was a cute short verse book, right at around 200 pages. So here is my mini review. Because the book was so small, and it is in verse there is only so much I can say about this book without giving anything away! I do recommend if you have a younger daughter, this is a great book for them!
In this book you meet Annie. A 12 year old girl with the passion to run, and to draw.
Everything around Annie is changing. Her mother is having a new baby. Her grandfather is slowly forgetting little things. Her best friend Max wants her to join the track team, but Annie feels that type of running is very limited, and she does not want to run to win or lose, she wants to run just to run.
Running is what helps her. Calms her.
She does not know what is going to happen when the baby comes, or if her grandfather will be ok.
When reading Heartbeat you will see Annie grow. Learn. and see how much she loves her family & they love her.
This book is a perfect short middle grade novel about kids having to deal with many different types of change at one time. And how to in the end overcome, learn & grow.
This would be the perfect book for younger readers, who need to know that change does not always mean bad things. That change can be good, beautiful even.

Sounds like a really cute middle grade verse book!
ReplyDeleteI shall have to keep my eyes open for it at the store. I really need to just venture into the kids area at the bookstore so I can start to get more middle grade books. :)
Thanks for the great review, glad you enjoyed this one!
