Sophomore year broke Clementine Williams’ heart. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and long story short: he’s excused, but Clem is vilified and she heads into summer with zero social life. Enter her parents’ plan to spend the summer on their sailboat. Normally the idea of being stuck on a tiny boat with her parents and little sister would make Clem break out in hives, but floating away sounds pretty good right now. Then she meets James at one of their first stops along the river. He and his dad are sailing for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and heal her broken heart? Told in alternating chapters that chronicle the year that broke Clem’s heart and the summer that healed it, Unbreak My Heart is a wonderful dual love story that fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Susane Colasanti will flock to.
My Thoughts:
I am really reading Contemporaries this year. I am reading more because I am in a YA Contemporary Challenge. I am finding myself really liking and enjoying them as well. They have a really great story to them that you can personally relate to.
At first I really didn't like the MC. Her depression made me as a reader, feel depressed as well. Then the story gets really in depth about Clementine's life, what she is dealing with, and why she is there. You get to see bit of her life, before Clementine felt like hopeless. You feel for her. Hope for her. And just want Clem to realize that life is to precious to waste, on the past.
Clem would rather spend her summer on land. Home alone. But, she is on a boat with her family for the whole summer. Clem's heart is broken. She feels that she has lost her best friend. In reality she has.
Clem and her best friend Amanda have been close for most of their lives. Best Friends. Until Ethan came along. Clem, Amanda, and Ethan were all friends. Only difference. Amanda and Ethan were dating. To Clem this was fine. She and Ethan got along. They had a lot in common, and he made her laugh.. everyday.
Their friendship got weird. Exchanging looks. Hanging out a little more than they should have, alone. Clem felt a bit of a connection with Ethan. But, he was her best friends, boyfriend. She just couldn't help it. But Ethan never helped. It seemed he was trying to see where he could go, what he could do. The secret touches. But it seemed Amanda already knew, she was suspicious of something she just had not idea what. Until one day, a day of celebration for Clem. She goes on a drive, with Ethan, alone.
That's when things change, forever.
Stranded on this boat with her family. Clem has nothing else to do but write in her journal and relive her life, and what went wrong over and over. She has not where to run to. Hiding everything inside from her family, but they know. She's sad. And they can see it. Clem slowly putting herself into a shell. I loved her sister Olive. She just knew what to say. For a little girl, she just always had the words for her sister. She looked up to her, and just wanted Clem to love her, like she did before.
It's not until one day runs into James. Literally. Clem is intrigued. Not really thinking anything about it. She don't realize how much time they will be spending together on the sea. There is not denying it. There is sparks there.
James is not perfect either, he has his own issues that he is enduring. With no one to turn to he as well is holding a lot in.
Until Clem and James has that talk. About what she is feeling, although it don't turn out they way expected. Later, she understands why he left her sitting there. James finally talks to Clem. Bringing them closer together, and then it happens. The kiss.
This book is beautiful. It gives you hope for things to be better for Clem. You look into your own life, and you can relate in some way or another with Clem. We have all at some point felt.. like there was nothing left to do. In the end we figure it out. Just as Clem did.
Melissa C. Walker wrote a very powerful story, you will fall in love right along with the Characters. You will learn to cherish the more important things in life, and leave the rest in the past.

  2. Wow this sounds like a great hard hitting contemp. I really love that she is sort of cast out to over think her past. I often find I over think about my past as well and it really is important to live for the moments you have and make the most of life.

Thanks for the great review, I shall have to look into this one some more before getting a copy when it releases.

  3. I read Melissa Walker's Lovestruck Summer but not any of her other books. This one sounds like it might reel me back in!
