BEFORE YOU READ MY REVIEW! JUST A NOTE THERE ARE SPOILERS! BECAUSE FOR ME TO FULLY GET MY 2 STAR REVIEW HOW I WANTED IT I HAD TO INCLUDE THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE BOOK. JUST A WARNING!
  • Blurb:
  • Chloe's older sister, Ruby, is the girl everyone looks to and longs for, who can't be captured or caged. When a night with Ruby's friends goes horribly wrong and Chloe discovers the dead body of her classmate London Hayes left floating in the reservoir, Chloe is sent away from town and away from Ruby.

But Ruby will do anything to get her sister back, and when Chloe returns to town two years later, deadly surprises await. As Chloe flirts with the truth that Ruby has hidden deeply away, the fragile line between life and death is redrawn by the complex bonds of sisterhood.

With palpable drama and delicious craft, Nova Ren Suma bursts onto the YA scene with the story that everyone will be talking about.
My Thoughts:
When this book was being talked about allot, I read the blurb and thought wow, sounds interesting. Like something that I would enjoy.  And, have you seen that cover? It is BEAUTIFUL. But for me that is where the like stopped, and the "what" started. And by "what" I mean, having to read over pages because you think you missed something, because something felt like it was "missing" shouldn't be something you have to do, every other page! From the very 1st page I didn't know what the heck was going on. A story of Olive is being told. Olive has been covered by water.....? There are people that live down there with gills, and stuff!! Really? So, I thought this was a story the sister, Ruby, told her little sister, Chloe, to scare her not to get into the water. Well, not, the sister has her swim across it... then a boat happens to appear.. with a body.
After time the sister, Chloe comes back to live with Ruby. I think by this time Ruby is a psychopath. Because she is crazy talking about these people living under this lake or whatever it is.
What was Chloe's sister? Was she just crazy? On something? She had this way about her. That was annoying, yet.. bossy. She would just look at someone and tell them to do it, and BAM they were doing it... Did she have mind powers? That is some information that would have been good to have. Because I am still wondering, What is she? The mom said Ruby was not normal. From the beginning she knew.. KNEW WHAT? She had a way about her? yes, she did... and that was manipulate people into doing things? I loved the love that Chloe had for her sister! To have a bond like that with your sibling is amazing. Then it was just creepy, how her sister was acting. Because now, the dead body... that was DEAD... some how, the sister Ruby made some deal with the people under the water? Is that right? Instead of her sister who should have died. Because, none the less, Ruby did ask her to swim across, for a personal item from the people of Olive. So instead of Chloe dying a friend did. And then she's alive. & she vanishes, if you leave the town. Again I really, liked & disliked this books at the same time. I was confused too much. Being left in the dark is not an issue. But eventually throughout the book, I want to know why. Leaving me without an answer is not mysterious. To me. I want to know why. how. when. I am into creepy. spooky. mysterious. thrilling novels. And Yes this book did have that. But it also had confusion for me. This book had spark. Just not enough, for me to love it. And I wanted to love it. I am not into writing bad reviews!! This is the 1st BAD one that I had to write, this year. I didn't want this book to be a DNF. I wanted to give it a chance. To try and understand what it was the author was trying to tell me. I got it, then I didn't.
I am sorry. For all of you that love it. I am glad that you could. I just couldn't and that is just My opinion. I do not want you to not get the book because of this review. Of my thoughts. Because they are mine. You might have a different opinion. Your thoughts might differ from mine. That is why are different! :)

This book just wasn't for me. To me it wasn't a winner. The writing was great. The story itself was just not as great as I would have hoped for. Or that I was anticipating.
I feel that Nova can write amazing things. The heart was in this book. It just wasn't for me.

  1. I could NOT agree more!!! Great review! I hate giving bad reviews, but sometimes it is necessary. I do NOT get why everyone loves this book so much... To each their own I suppose! xoxo

  2. Loretta, I completely understand what you're saying about how things weren't fully explained, but I kind of liked that. I do wish the sisters had been more likable since Chloe comes off clueless and Ruby was so manipulative. That was actually my main beef with the book. I thought the writing was exceptional though and I actually loved the creepy, strange vibe of both the story and Ruby's powers. I definitely agree that its not a novel for everyone and I really appreciate your honest review.

  3. Thanks for the honest review! While I agree with Shannon and Carrie about not needing everything to be explained, I'm typically not a fan of books where I'm lost at the beginning, middle, *and* end. Two of the three I'm okay with, but not a triple threat.
